Star Anise - The celestial beauty with a secret identity! These stunning star-shaped pods might sound like they're related to anise seed, but they're actually completely different plants - star anise comes from the evergreen Illicium verum tree, while anise seed comes from the Pimpinella anisum herb. Though both share that distinctive licorice-like flavor thanks to the compound anethole, they're not interchangeable in cooking - anise seed is perfect for baking where it distributes evenly in cookies and cakes, while star anise is best used whole in liquids where it can infuse slowly.

Star anise brings assertive warmth that creates a slight numbing effect in the mouth, making it an essential ingredient in authentic pho where its complex flavor builds the longer it simmers in broths. We suggest pulling it out after about 15 minutes to avoid overpowering your dish. Beyond soups and stews, these beautiful stars can flavor fruits or be incorporated into some baked goods where they add both visual drama and distinctive taste, but not as a substitute for anise seed in traditional baking recipes.

Our pieces range from nearly whole stars down to individual points, all delivering the same remarkable flavor. The spice that proves nature creates the most beautiful seasonings.
